Jail & Incarceration
Our community’s efforts to reduce incarceration are paying off and we are seeing a significant reduction of bed days in Whatcom County Jail for District Court charges. Electric home monitoring, drug court, and mental health court have all had positive impacts on reducing incarceration rates. I think the biggest area for continued improvement is offering more options for mental health and substance abuse treatment at the local level. We need to support law enforcement by having jail alternatives. I am optimistic about the 32 bed crisis stabilization center that is set to break ground this summer at our Interim Work Center at 2030 Division Street. My commitment as Mayor will be to work with the County Executive and elected officials to ensure operational funding is adequate for these facilities to operate 24 hours a day.
